Why is Endicott Park my go-to day trip?
There aren’t many day trips where you find your toddlers feeding a Shetland pony with a park ranger, strolling historical gardens reminiscent of Secret Garden, followed by a picnic at a modern playground. Endicott is the perfect venue that both appeases my kid’s sense of adventure, and my more practical needs! I couldn't believe walking into Endicott Park that I’d find a trifecta of fun activities, educational elements, and, best of all, stroller-friendly paths.
It’s perfect for family visits including grandparents, and solo-parent adventures. Endicott was the first park I visited alone with two under two years of age, and it was a lovely memory and thankfully not the chaotic trip I imagined it would be.
Townly Family Children’s Barnyard:
The historic Townly Barn, with its updated stalls, has goats, pigs, geese, sheep, and lots of chickens! When a ranger is around they will sometimes have a pig out sunning, and sometimes allow for gentle pets. Important note: Endicott is not a petting zoo, but the fences allow for many close friendly interactions. Much more so than at a Zoo.
Adjacent to the barnyard is a field with a combination of a gentle horse, Shetland pony, sheep, and a steer. We’ve been lucky enough to be there when they were giving the horse and pony hay, and my daughter was able to feed the pony.
As an educator, I love the chance to have hands-on learning experiences. For school-aged children, Endicott offers educational camps and workshops.
Glen Magna Farms, Historic Estate and Gardens:
Turning a little off path, past the fishing pond, is the historic Glen Magna Estate. You’re immediately transported into a different time, from the Rose Garden full of heirloom roses, to vine covered columns reminiscent of Roman ruins.
My favorite find is a hidden garden behind the Derby Summer House, a National Historic Landmark.
The park boasts flat trails for the whole family, including little ones. For families with older kids, there are more adventurous hikes through Whipple Hill Meadow, and around the Wetlands. With over 165 acres, Endicott Part is a venue with lots to explore. With almost every trip we have a new story to add, from laughing at a flock of loose chickens interrupting a picnic, to discovering a new hidden path. We just keep coming back.
