Northbound or southbound, Route 77 leads to Portland Head Light and its adjacent Fort Williams Park in South Portland. It’s worth the journey! It has become one of our favorite places to take our young family. In fact, we love it so much, we hosted our son’s first birthday onsite! It was the perfect location
for all of our guests, who ranged from age one to eighty!
With plenty of room to play, beautiful sites to see, and great food to eat – it is easy to see why it is one of Maine’s most popular destinations.
Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park offer so much for the whole family to enjoy and explore. There is over ninety acres of recreational space where you can stroll the cliffside loop, walk the rocky beach, enjoy the playground, fly a kite, or tour the arboretum.
And it is "Ahoy! for Adventure!" for older kids at Maine’s oldest lighthouse that has deep roots in history from the American Revolution through to World War II. Learning more about the history of Portland Head Light at the museum on site is really good for the imagination. Exhibits of artifacts, documents and a historical timeline mix and match with multiple historical forts outside to appreciate why The Battery was a lookout post for fast attack boats, how shooting shells at battleships from Battery Blair was easy, and... how about telling stories about the super-old Goddard Mansion?! What was it like for soldiers who lived there?
Should active days be followed by some famous Maine cuisine? Absolutely! When you and your little ones are tired from all that exploring, there are four food vendors on site to satisfy your hunger cravings. From Bite into Maine and Cousins Maine Lobster to Sweet Caroline’s Hot Dogs and Gorgeous Gelato, you are sure to find a traditional New England bite that pleases everyone in the family!
And don’t just take my word for it, following my son’s first birthday party onsite, my adventurous nephew proclaimed, “This place makes me really happy!”
